There is no procedure, just begin using synthetic.
M1 0w40 is popular choice, though many here use other. Red line, Amsoil are well regarded. many use castrol and penzoil as well. Choose one and stick with it.
lots to read here, lots of opinions on oil and interval.
But if you want to *know* if you can extend your change interval, get an oil analysis done.
oh and use a good quality filter. cant go wrong with OEM, WIX, Purolator. Don't bother with Fram.
FWIW here is what I do:
M1 0w40, oversized Pure-one filter, 5k interval. I change the filter at each oil change.
