Excessive tire wear in the middle of the tread is usually caused by excessive tire pressure. If pressure is fine, then it might be a bad tire.
My youngest son just had an issue with the set of Cooper Zeon Sport A/S tires on his car where the outside shoulder on one tire only wore down to the belts while the other four were still fine. Multiple different applications of rubber with varying wear and traction characteristics are used in construction of modern day tires, Use of the wrong grade of rubber in any location on a tire can result in extremely short tire life.
