ACC calibration mode

Can anyone tell me just exactly WHAT is calibrated when the ACC is cycled in the calibration mode?. I ask primarily because I'm about to purchase and install a new motor assembly for the recirculation door in the HVAC system of my 2002 Aero; the plastic arm on the old one was snapped like a toothpick. I understand from recent posts that the range of travel of the arm is established when the arm cycles and pushes against its stop; this increases the current draw in the motor which in turn "programs" the ACC to the correct stopping point. I need to know if this "programming" only occurs when the ACC is in the calibration mode, or whether it also occurs (for the recirculation door, at least) automatically during normal, day-to-day operation. I don't want to install my pricey new part and have it self destruct the first time I select recirculation. At the same time, I don't really want to calibrate the system unnecessarily since I get the impression from various posts that too frequent calibrations is hazardous to the health of various arms/linkages/etc. Besides, I'm just curious - what gets calibrated? I don't have the WIS to refer to. Thanks -
