Certainly that is a reasonable price to replace the transmission. An excellent price actually. What exactly is he going to do for $1200?
However, it is not reasonable to experience transmission failure after 134k.
I assume this is an automatic? how does the fluid look? how does it smell? If it looks dirty, black and smells burnt that is a bad sign. But its not necessarily a terminally bad sign.
Was the transmission fluid changed regularly (if at all)?
Exactly what parts is he including in this quote and how many hrs of labor? I suspect he is not replacing the entire transmission. but rather just a component. and if so it may not be such a good price.
BTW, what codes did he pull? is this a Saab mechanic with a Tech II?
A $1200 transmission replacement sounds (to me) too good to be true.
