I'm addicted to Saabs - so I'm not totally rational. But I do wonder out-loud for all of the comments that they are not a good buy with over 100k miles...are these cars really more expensive to own than anything else (aside from buying a new Honda Accord or Toyota Camry...).
I bought my 2000 9-5SE V6 for $8,400 w/72,000 miles.
I had the timing belt changed and Saab paid for it.
I paid to have the tensioner done at the same time - $500.
CPS - I did it myself.
DIC's - bought a pair on eBay well ahead of time knowing they'd go eventually. They did. I put them in. $300.
Some exhaust - about $300 if I remember right.
I've got one blend door motor that needs to be replaced ($150 coming up).
And my heater bypass valve is leaking...that's going to be 2 hours of 4letter words and a $50 part.
I iron my own SID's to keep the pixels working.
And I don't finance cars - so that might be a big difference.
But for now - I have 111,100 on the odo.
And my total investment including parts and repairs has been way less than $10,000. I've put 40,000 miles on a really nice and safe car. And it's probably still worth $4,000ish? So my total cost (not including oil changes, tires, wiper blades, gas, coolant, brake pads...) is about $6,000.
I think if I spent $30,000 on just about anything else - and put 40,000 miles on it...it probably wouldn't be worth $24,000 now.
So my math - I think it's a pretty cheap ride if you buy right. Just one guy's opinion though.
