Back from the Indy......long Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Had an appointment this morning to install two sway-bar end links, both front ball joints, and check the timing chain tension. Symptoms were a slight suspension noise when backing up after being parked, a bang from the right front suspension during an extreme left turn at speed recently (beating oncoming traffic), and 235,000+ miles.
Verdict:
1) Original factory ball joints are still tight! So tight that the mechanic "refused" to change them even though I had the new ball joints sitting in the car.
2) Sway-bar end links were still good. These were the factory original links but visibly looked new. The right side link was slightly loose (twisted by hand w/o much effort), the left side required much greater effort. They installed the new sway-bar links and it was readily apparent when the old ones were out of the car that the grease was fully consumed, the rubber boots were collapsed, and the links would have started to wear very fast.
3) Rear bushings for front A-arms are still tight on both sides of car. The mechanic says his 9-5, with only 140,000 miles, will soon need new bushings on both sides.
4) Tensioner travel is at 14mm and the WIS specs 15mm as maximum allowable wear. I now have an appointment for Tuesday to have a new timing chain installed.
$45 to install the sway-bar links, estimated $400 to "roll-in" a new chain on Tuesday, and $15 re-stocking/shipping charge to return the ball joints (or I could keep them I guess for possible future use).
