My wife's '03 Linear SportWagon has it and I went out to play in a storm last winter. Rural roads here, semi-plowed. The car handled well, was very composed, and it was hard to get out of shape without deliberate effort with ESP turned on. Turn it off and it felt like a normal FWD car. I have to say I was impressed, but would like better tires than the current Dunlop M3 Wintersports.
I did the same roads in my '96 9000, shod with Nokian WRs. Very different feel, but I could drive aggressively more easily in the 9K, but then I'm used to that car in all conditions and hardly ever drive the 9-5. For bad conditions the ESP is probably better and my wife hasn't complained about it.
OTOH, ESP is nice, but NOT essential, IMHO. Four good tires on a Saab and common sense will still get you through just about anything winter has, barring situations where AWD/4WD is the only answer.
