Re: HID H7 LOW BEAM INSTALLATION Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: HID H7 LOW BEAM INSTALLATION, saabsince 93b ![]() ![]() |
I did this to my 2000 9-5 eight years ago. I assume that technology has changed a little since then, so you'll have to pick and choose which of my comments might be helpful.
1. The optical system on a hedlight system using halogen bulbs is different thn one using xenon bulbs. Adjusting the headlight aim to be effective and not blind oncoming traffic is a little trickier, but yes, it can be done.
2. Current requirements for the xenon bulb HID system is less than that for the halogen bulbs.....35W versus 55W.
3. You may have to modify the orange relay....effectively turning off its' halogen filament monitoring function.
4. Flash-to-pass functionality is unaffected, since it uses the inner halogen bulbs.
5. My system came with separate ignitors and ballasts....a separate ignitor and ballast for each side. Locating these components and mounting them requires some creativity. The ignitor should be mounted as close as possible to the xenon bulbs. On my 2007 9-5 the ignitor is actually the base of the xenon bulb.
6. In the kit I used eight years ago the xenon bulb base was modified to fit into an H7 socket. Hopefully, the company you bought your kit from will be around to service your need for replacement bulbs a few years down the road.
6. On mine, the modified base of the bulb did not fit exactly as the original H7 had. Some extra modification work was required.
7. I installed new wiring, relays and fuses for the primary (+12VDC) feed to the ballasts. I used the +12VDC leads at the headlight to control the relays, which in turn controlled the +12VDC to the ballasts. There are technical reasons which I can't explain here which may not apply to your kit.
8. Your state's motor vehicle inspection may not approve of the HID installation.....if they pick it up (read extremely doubtful).
In conclusion.....you will see a notable improvement in the amount of light on the road, and the bulb life is vastly improved. Xenon bulbs do not burn out, they fade slowly and the color shifts to a yellowish brown. And, you'll see oncoming drivers flashing their lights at you occassionally, even after you get them set up well.
