...I noticed those posts regarding the excess heat as well. The unit does run warmer when set at "24", most likely due to the preamp now driving more voltage to the power amp. I seem to recall some very old posts referencing this as the optimal setting for the "HK premium sound" setup, based on some literature or the SAAB shop manual (I forget which). Add to that the fact that many/most of us on this board have been using this setting with no reported problems, makes it less worrisome to me...
One other thing to try is to turn the loudness setting to "OFF".. you may find that it cleans things up a bit as well...
Once you do that, if you're still not satisfied, then based on your preferences and comments, I would start with the dash speakers... Infinity, Boston Acoustics and Polk all make some very good drivers at somewhat reasonable prices...
