I would totally try to find a V6 in the 1999-2000 range. They are MUCH less of a crapshoot than the 4-cyls, which commonly suffer from oil sludge, PCV issues (if not already taken care of with PCV 6), head bolt stuff, head gasket problems... etc. If you change the oil on the V6 and keep up with the timing belt AAANNDDD tensioners every 60k miles not much will go wrong engine-specifically. Yeah you'll still get the usual 9-5 stuff like SID pixels, ABS modules, coolant bypass valves, turbo failure, but whatever. I've got an '01 V6 sedan with 183k miles on it that runs excellently. It consumes a little oil but nothing to worry about. I usually need to add some every 2k miles or so. It's also quite smooth compared to the 2.3t's. I had previously complained a bit because I thought mine was a bit rough at idle and under load but then I drove a couple 4-cyls and it's very noticeable how much smoother it actually is.
