$600 is about $400 too much for this job in my opinion.
A mechanic at the dealer or an indie should be able to do this in 1-2 hours tops. The hardest part is pressing out the old bearing and pressing in the new one. Then you may need the wheel aligned.
The noise should sort of pulsate and get louder at higher speeds. Get up to speed and then go around curves or swerve left and right. If the sound gets louder going around a right hand curve then the left bearing is bad and vice versa. (When you go right, it puts the load on the left.)
You can probably reuse the ring, but you might get it just in case. There aren't left and right bearings, just one part. You shouldn't need anything else.
I considered doing mine myself but took it to an Indie who charged me about $30 labor. I watched them do it and was glad I didn't try it myself because of the dificulty they had pulling apart the wheel components that were stuck together. Unless you own a large press, you'd have to find a machine shop to press the bearing out and the new one in.
