I am not sure how often the shocks go bad, but my experience is getting 100,000 miles out of shocks is pretty rare.
I had great success in replacing the rear shocks with Koni shocks. I used the orginal springs, but set them on the upper preload level. You have to be careful with Konis. The lower groove or level for preload is less than stock and will lower the ride height too much. The upper is a little above the factory setting and will raise the ride height a bit which is good if your springs are starting to "sack" a bit.
I learned the hard way by my indy setting them to lower and the bottoming with passengers in the rear seat was terrible.
