Snow Chains Not Worth The Hassle

With all the snow this month across much of the USA, I thought I'd share my experience with snow chains on my new 9-5. Bottom line: high hopes gone unmet. Product: Shur-Grip EZ Chain manuf. by Burns Bros. in Oregon. Build Quality: 5-stars. Ease of installation: dry tires-3 stars--wet/snowy tires-1 star. Performance: 5-stars (under 30 mph). Fit: 1-star (rubbed on the right front). Ease of removal: close to impossible. Had to use a floor jack to locate the snap. And of course, the tires were wet & snowy. Price: 5-stars-$65 by mail thru J.C. Whitney. Comes folded in a nifty, plastic carrying box that fits easily in your trunk. Test: snowed-in alley in suburban Chicago. Got the car thru 8-inch deep snow like a Sherman tank. But the rubbing, extreme difficulty in removal and stated-risk of tire & wheel damage if the chains are used above 30 mph makes them wholly impractical for me. I'd suggest emergency use only. I'm sending them back for a full refund.
