Transmission noise (long)

(I posted this yesterday, but I'm kinda desperate for some help.)
I just finished installing a new gear selector cable. As has happened to some others here, the ball connector on the transmission end broke. I realized I had a problem when the shifter suddenly had too much play and when I passed through Neutral or into Park the transmission made a nasty grinding noise. I also believe that as I passed through Neutral, the lights in the car flashed off!?!?
The new cable is in and I think I set the adjustment correctly, however I'm still getting that nasty grinding in Park and in Neutral. The car runs & sounds fine in all other gears including Reverse. Also, the Park transmission lock seems to work normally.
To make it stranger, I started it again to check something else and the noise was gone! Everything sounded fine. I took advantage of the opportunity to check the transmission fluid and it was low (it has a leak). I shut the engine off, put a quart of fluid in, started the engine and the noise was back!
What do I do next? Please help!
It's a 1999 9-5 4 cyl.
