I just replaced the whole unit.
If you search you will find a few posts showing the ring bent, and I think it describes the method used.
I read WIS, and it does not give a method of removal.
Pulling the unit out of the tranny will make it easier to work on, just be careful of the seal at the opening, pull it out slowley and just topoff the tranny when you are done, not much fluid will come out.
Here's a like to one on a 900, but it appears that model did not have the ring, but everything else looks the same.
