...whatever's afflicting the piston could have scored the cylinder walls, which might require reboring and honing the cylinder, or might render the entire block unusable.
The only way to know is to disassemble the engine to inspect.
If you're doing the work yourself, it may be a bit of a wash. Replacement engines are in high demand and thus plenty expensive. If your block, heads and crank are good you might consider the rebuild route, as replacement engines are somewhat unknown quantities themselves.
