fill it up the upper line with regular water. The light should go out. If it come back on in a day or so and the level is down you have a leak.
Most of the time it is the coolant bypass valve. This valve is in the center of the engine compartment under the windshield way at the back of the engine.....so far back it is hard to find unless you know what you are looking for. When the valve leaks, it drips down on the Exhaust and catalytic converter....so the coolant evaporates. You won't see a leak on the ground or the garage floor. this is an 80-90 dollar part and 1 to 1.5 hours of labor.
Do a search on "heater bypass valve" on this site and you will see lots of references. These valves last about 60,000 miles.
