You may recall me responding to your post a few days ago. I have a 00 9-3 SE 5spd (136k)and a 04 9-5 Aero auto (45k or so). The cars are definitely different.
Try the Aero in sport mode...Jekyll and Hyde transformation. I find the 9-3 peaky in comparison. The TD04 turbo and larger displacement Aero has much less turbo lag than my 9-3 and therefore does not feel as fast, it pulls stronger from lower rpms. The Aero also has less torque steer, even though it has 45 more hp and more torque. So one gets the feel of a fast car with the 9-3 because everything happens at once but it is not as quick as the Aero, dont be fooled. Where the Aero really shines is on a long stretch of highway. The seats are wonderful and the car is built like a tank. It gets better gas mileage than the 9-3 on the road. Slam the door and listen to the solid clunk you never heard in your 9-3.
I love my old 9-3 and drive it to work every day, I have fixed many of the things you say your car will need, and you will have to if you keep the 9-3. But the 9-5 Aero is a better, higher quality rig. Go for it.
And steel gray or merlot are great colors! I prefer the look of the 04-05 model, but what the heck, the price seems right.
Tell us when you get it.
