9-5 V6 crashed

I recently had a engine failure on my 1999 Saab 9-6 with the Opel V6. Not sure what happened - I had the timing belt changed 25,000 miles ago along with the top-middle tensioner (not by a Saab mechanic - he said the other tensioners did not need to be replaced - he only ordered one...). The engine is a write-off and the timing belt is in place and intact but with a small lengthwise cut. Has anyone got an idea what happened? The engine will run roughly for a few seconds with some major clanging and shut down. The car is very nice otherwise and I would consider putting a used engine in. Does anyone have a suggestion? If I get an engine with 100,000 miles, what parts should I replace to avoid another engine failure?
