And yes, if she has a 2005 9-5 Sedan that isn't an Aero it is an Arc. You could only get the linear in wagon form for 2004 and 2005. I think the knock she is describing is probably the same sound you're describing. My 2004 Aero makes a rapid knocking/buzzing sound, just like when you stomp on the brakes and the ABS comes on. There are no differences between years or models of 9-5's. ESP uses wheel sensors and, I believe, a central sensor somewhere in the car to determine where the center of the car's rotation is, and applies the brakes to individual wheels as it sees necessary. Check out the video below. I found it really cool/interesting, especially when they showed the slow-motion clip of the wheel locking up on the test car to keep it on track.
