Sorry, but I think these cars pretty much had the sludge issue resolved from 2004 on. As long as there are service recs I don't see it as an issue. Maybe just don't buy a super low mile car that was driven only in town. OTOH, I recently bought an 04 Arc with only 40K in 4 years, and 2 documented oil changes - when I pulled the valve cover it was spotless. Get it checked by an indy (incl pulling valve cover) and look for some service recs.
Also keep something in mind. These cars cost about 50 cent/per mile to own and operate over the long term. Maybe a bit less if you do the maintenance yourself. But that is $40-50K over 100K miles. Buy a good looking car with the options you want, plan on keeping it, and if the worst happens and you lose an engine to sludge, spend the $5K to fix it and keep right on truckin'. Your cost of operation went up about 10-15% - big deal. It just isn't worth losing sleep over.
