I have a 2001 V6 95 (that I bought used) in the shop for a timing belt replacement with all the goodies. We have the gates kit for that year, but mechanic says that the parts don't fit and is wondering if the engine was replaced - I have no idea. Is there an ID or serial number stamped somewhere on the engine I could cross reference? The guy I bought it from has no knowledge of an engine replacement, but there appears a dent/scratch on the metal above the grill that looks like something heavy was dropped on it. It isn't large but there appears an impact mark.

Mechanic says the belt we have is shorter than the belt he pulled out of the car and the pensioners and pulleys aren't lining up where they should. He would have to try and snip some metal to try and make it fit. Apparently their is a different kit for an early version of the 99 V6 engine.

Any words of wisdom? I'd like to see if I can pull a serial number from the engine to cross reference, but can't seem to locate anything stamped on the engine.

The belt we pulled out of the car says SAAB 90-572-530. I tried pulling this up in EPC and it didn't find anything. Google yields a reference to an OPEL belt with that PN.
