Although they can be useful keep in mind that chains/cables are useful only under a limited set of extreme conditions anyway. They should be used only for relatively short distances and at low speeds (~30 MPH or less). If you are likely to be in conditions where chains are potentially useful you are already in conditions where snow tires should ideally be used (with chains possibly in reserve). There really is no substitute to the tire itself.
I will say the 9-5 actually does pretty well with the OEM tires when new based on some limited snow experience with my '06 the first winter on the standard tires (I'm currently running 16" snows just the same). Not sure where your going or what you expect to encounter or what your normal driving is like at this time of year. Obviously good snow tires best first line choice for snow.
