I have an 01 LPT and 04 Arc. I feel the 04-05 are excellent - the PCV and sludge issue was sorted out and they come with full synthetic oil. All 4 cyl - 185/220/250 hp. The Arc and Aero use the better Mitsu TD-04 turbo. They retain the nice Saab interior (real wood) and traditional styling.
If you can find a well-maintained and documented 01 to 03 for a good price I wouldn't hesitate, but imho the 04-05 are more reliable. The 06-08 have a strong GM influence which some like and some don't but are apparently very reliable. Great deals on all years and I wouldn't particularly worry about getting (and paying for) a CPO warranty.
