You lucked out; you found a guy who didn't have Saab experience or training and was honest about it. Even though hs answers weren't both correct.
1. TRANSMISSION OIL CHECK: You need a special wrench, available from Saab (P/N 8792590). Unless you have a visible leak, this is probably OK.
2. AIR FILTER: There are two....the cabin ventilation filter, and engine air filter. Either can be easily replaced without any special Saab-only tools. The cabin ventilation filter is a pain but quite doable; it's located underneath the glove box (30K miles is Saab's recommended interval). The engine air filter is behind the right front bumper; it's 20 minutes work if you're dyslexic.
I would visit your friendly indy and make sure you've completed the required/recommended preventive maintenance procedures. As an example, the serpentine belt and pulleys for an I4 (timing belt if you have a V6) is critical. Both will strand you; the timing belt (V6) breakage will cost you a new head.
In conclusion, use your trusted indy to stay on top of preventive maintenance; Saab's are just too different to trust to someone who has no experience with them
