interesting conversation with my indy regarding oil

So, 2 weeks ago I asked my indy to check out a 9-5 for my gf. we talked about all the issues with the 2.3 engine, he ran an oil pressure test and went over everything on the car. She bought the car despite it having slightly low oil pressure at 2k RPM. Oil change fixed that and allowed for sludge inspection which came up cleaner than most of the race motors I tear down.
Fast forward to today: he calls me with another 9-5 2.3 in the shop. less than 5% flow through the pickup screen, yet still high oil pressure. Worn timing chain and the whole motor a mess. He thinks it had to do with extended oil change intervals and/or wrong oil in the car.
just goes to show a few things: PPIs are worth every penny and then some; proper maintenance is crucial; use of the best and correct fluids is crucial.
he also gave me a lesson in oils. having been into cars that notoriously develop low oil pressure as they get hot (944/951) i have always known about the use of synthetics and had the belief that a heavier oil was better. he said he always had the same feeling until a mobil 1 rep told him about the new oils and a VW rep told him about the 5W40 they are using. the light oils are able to circulate better and stay cooler than the heavier 20W50 that we have always raced with.
just sharing what he told me about....
