First, the DI approach used by GM was essentially developed by Saab - variable valve timing allows massive valve overlap at low power output which allows dillution of the intake charge by exhaust valve. This enables the system to get by with a conventional 3-way catalyst.
Second, I bitched at John Libbos at the last Owner's Convention that Saab invented it, they should be first to implement it, before Opel and Pontiac. After putting out the Company line, he turned and said "yeah, I agree completely." Then last fall John voted with his feet, making him perhaps the last of the Orange, CT. Saab employees out the door (although I think a couple of them are still GM employees).
In any event, the current 9-5 engine wouldn't support direct fuel injection b/c there's no facility for variable valve timing in that engine. One reason it should have been deep-sixed in 2003, replaced with the more modern 9-3SS motors (4 and 6 cylinder).
