Just happened to me.
you have to have dexterity to unblock it, since the plastic portion may have gotten stuck.
Whatever you do, be careful, because if you poke a screwdriver in there, you can break the microswitch that indicates "latch open". Another side effect of breaking this switch - the cargo area light stays on, for 18 minutes, after you lock the car. Not good in cold weather.
The mechanisms were back-ordered here in Canada, so I had to go used. And it turns out another switch had gone, and now the cargo light stays off, even when open.
