It is called business. You see when you have a product to sell; sometimes you let buyers know about that product. One way to do this is advertising. One very effective method of advertising is TV commercials. The theory is that the more people who see the ad think about buying the car. When that idea is in their head they might stop by a Saab Dealer and look at a Saab. They will test drive the Saab and discover what a great car it is they might buy one. When they sell more Saabs they make more money. When they make more money, they create shareholder value. When shareholder value is created the top executives get nice bonuses (sometimes they get nice bonuses anyway).
When they sell cars they make money. It is all about the money. GM is in business to make money. That’s why it is called Auto business, not the auto non-profit, not the auto club, not the auto let’s make some fun cars, but the auto business.
At the end of the day the GM wants (needs) Saab to make money. Period.
