I've got an '02 Aero manual and an '05 Aero auto. The auto in sport mode is really fun and yes, as many have said, this tranny is an excellent match for the engine. The paddle shifters really are nothing more than a gimmick unless you feel the need to go to redline in each gear.
I'm also a dedicated manual shifter and feel there is much better control with a manual with much more positive feedback. If you get a Genuiine SAAB torque rod bushing it helps the sloppiness a lot. It all depends on how and where you drive. The Aero is a driver's car and thougn IMHO you lose some involvement in the driving experience with the auto, it doesn't really diminish that experience.
