When you get to Anchorage sometime before November you should take yourself over to the Saab indy (Arctic Imports) and get a block heater installed - or do it yourself at the Auto Center on post. Due to the geographic setting, Anchorage has a history of air quality issues in the winter due to temperature inversions. Aside from the environmental aspects, plugging in your car makes it start easier, you get heat out of the vents faster, and is kinder do your engine when it's twenty or so below zero. There are studies that show block heater use can improve overall winter fuel economy by as much as 10%.
Have a good time in Anchorage! I suggest Eagle River if you're going to live off post. Lots better quality of life than the east Anchorage neighborhoods.
