I have dismantled my unit and the reason for the problem is poor contsct of the flexible connector inside. It is almost impossible to fix. The design is such that the connector is glued onto the circuit board and the LCD. Apparently the glue stops holding with time. There is also a rubber seal that supposedly creates additional pressure on the connector. Somebody on the BB suggested (for a 900NG display - I have not tried this fix myself) to add some padding to the seal to apply more pressure on the connector. I advise that you exercise extreme caution when you dismantle the unit, because if you tear the connector off the circuit board (and it comes off fairly easily), there is no way back.
