Didn't some folks report issues with the 5W40 M1 diesel when it first came out. I've tried 0W40 and 15W50. The car loved the 15W50, but it is no good in NY winters and mpg dropped a tad. 0W40 doesn't quite sound like it is giving maximum protection the way the thicker oil did. I might try the diesel stuff to compare. I think all are probably ok with 5K intervals. The oil is always appears very dark when drained.
