part of the problem is the harness does not have enough slack.
Make sure you fix this right. take out the trunk liner, or at least remove some of the fasteners. that plastic "L" fitting at the top of the photo snaps out of its hole in the trunk lid. Snap it sideways to get it out.
As I remember you can unclip the harness inside the trunk lid to get more slack. Solder the splices, use proper colored wires. Use heat shrink insulation and a heat gun. Add at lest 3 inches to the harness so there is lots of slack in the harness. I also put a large piece of shrink wrap on the whole harness where it goes into that black plastic thing.
