If you want all your techno-gadgets, a fully loaded A4 can actually well exceed the price of a fully loaded 9-5 ... as in $10k difference, more if you count all the discounts, rebates, and other dealer incentives you can find for Saabs right now.
AAAANYwho, there's not really any point in dwelling on this anymore since these cars are of different eras... according to wiki, there have been four generations of A4 since the first 9-5 (which we all know is more or less exactly the same as our current 9-5s). I'd say the 9-5 can pretty easily spank the first two generations, and probably the third, too... so maybe finally Audi has caught up to the 9-5 after a decade. whatevs - Saab just got it right the first time! I'll agree there's not much point in buying a new 9-5 right now, but overall between the 9-5 and the A4, I think the Saab is the better-thought-out, more well-rounded, more significant vehicle in its main era.
and for what you guys have been saying about the looks?!? Blasphemy!! We are Saab fans! I demand you turn in your keys to me right away! Maybe some Audi forum will accept you Saab-outcasts! Time will tell, the 9-5 (esp 2002-2005 models) is by far the more beautiful design.
