Wrong title. Should be "1968 motors", which is how far back that 2.3 motor can trace its lineage.
This basic motor and its predecessors have served Saab well enough, powering at least 4 major generations of cars (99/900, 9000, NG900/OG9-3, and 9-5). That Saab has had but 4 major car generations over that 40 year period, even while fielding two distinct model lines, speaks volumes about what has lead us to the current predicament = but I digress.
The engine is fully mature, and the problems which have come forward with each new revision have been addressed. I think the circa 1985 16-valve version was the only engine revision that didn't initally have some kind of problem, but again, I digress. In it's current iteration, it is at least as reliable and long lived as anyone else's engine, given reasonable care (5000 mile oil changes with full synthetic, preferable XW-40, motor oil). That said, it is far rougher than the 2.0 in the 9-3SS, less efficient, and requires more service over it's life [DI Cassette failures, valve cover leaks, a chance for head gasket replacement due to the combination of iron block and aluminum head].
The a/t has proven to be very, very reliable. Hots gas in city driving, as compared to a manual or CVT or DSG, but that's the nature of the beast. If you tow a lot, change the fluid every other oil change. If not, change at around 30,000 and then every third oil change. Use Toyota T4 fluid.
