You can bypass the switch by jumping the black and white wires in the switch harness. I used a large paperclip when I was "stuck" once to get back on the road. Just jam the ends of the paper clip inth the harness where the wires emerge.
You can also row the shifter back and forth while turning the key. That can sometimes persuade the switch to operate properly.
I was tempted to wire in a momentary override switch but in the end I coughed up the dough at eeuroparts, end replaced the switch:
