Hello all, I am now at the stage of trying to quickly find either a rebuilt or used TD04 for my 1999 9-5 2.3 toasted Garret turbo swap out in conjunction with the head gasket job.

After many queries from turbo rebuilders I can find online, finding none so far stock the Saab TD04 is as a rebuilt for sale option that I can find.. Found on ebay turboxboost does on occassion have them and he said they may be getting one in next week, but cost after shipping is about $550.. not bad actually fior rebuilt, but at with costs related to headgasket job and other essentials whiel in there, I am leaning towards a used unit and figured if I can find a low mileage (around 50K ish?) TD04 for say $200 ish knowing they have decent record of not self destructing and blowing oil all over unlike the Garrett, throw it in and if it craps out, have rebuilt later??

I am also finding used parts dealers have no clue when I ask specifics about if it is a Mitsubishi or Garrett.. all they say is "give me the year, make and model number of the car it is to be instaled on and I will tell you what I have".. I try and explain the Garret Mitsubishi swap out and that some years the 9-5's had both types and all I need to do is determiine if it is the Garrett of Mitsubishi, and they don't like that either and most tell me since it is still on the car, they have no clue, back to make, model, year, etc. as listed in their inventory on computer..

I asked the last guy for example if that 2003 9-5 turbo you have listed on line for $200 is for an aero or linear(?? not exactly up on what years had what models??), that didn't help him or me, but he did however ask me if it was for a 235E or 235R engine, that info at the moment here at work I have no clue so couldn't tell him.. I told him I didn't think as from what I have found it appears the Mitsubishi turbo I am looking for will supposedly fit both engines, he said nope they don't they are different..

Is the engine number the determining factor between Garret and Mitsubishi for this turbo finding/identifying issue where one is for the 235E and other for 235R?? I did see a new TD04 for sale on ebay in Japan (new $900 not!) and the listing said was for 235R engine (P/N on blown up photo showed 49189-01830).. Since this TD04 also cam on some 9-3's and earlier model Saabs and also for the 205 engines, and that some have -5 or -6 after the model#.. it's quite confusing to me and expecially in trying to tell someone exactly they need to provide me with the right one?

From what I found in searching, I have identified at least two potential part numbers for this TD-04 unit... P/N 49189-01800 (the one turboxboost had for sale last week) or 49189-01830 (new one in japan on ebay)

Difference between these two units for my aplication? When I decided to make the swap, I didn't think finding a turbo would be this difficult, but I suppose anytime you stray from stock parts and retrofits, there are bound to be unanswered questions and issues.

So if any of you knowledgeable folks know what it is I need to be relaying to these used parts places to be sure get the right TD04 model turbo (perhaps just engine series #????) your help would be greatly appreciated.. hope to order one today?

many thanks..
