Fan Running While Engine Off? (Car Never Started)

Hi all,
Last night my car wouldn't start - sounds like a dead battery. Over the course of the last week, I noticed the car was struggling to start, so as a precaution I ensured my emergency car starter was fully charged. When the car didn't turn over last night, I popped the hood, and before I attached the cables, the *ENGINE FAN TURNED ON*. Note that the car had been parked ALL day - it was never started.
Anyway, my car starter was unable to give enough juice to start the car, at least in the time I allotted. I was in a bit of a hurry so after waiting five minutes and trying again, I gave up and borrowed the roommate's car. I doubt it's the battery because it's less than six months old (looks great / no corrosion on terminals), but tonight I'll take the battery in for a test/charge at AutoZone where I purchased it. Once I get it started I'll check the voltage at the terminals to see if the alternator is, just to verify all is okay there.
Under what conditions should the cooling fan run? Is this normal condition for a vehicle sitting around (in the sun) all day. I'm wondering if this fan has been running a lot, draining my battery.
Thanks,
KevinH
