For someone not familiar with the exhaust makeup on SAABs, welding in a new bit on to the downpipe may seem like the right, and easiest thing to do. Hopefully, your friend bolted to the downpipe, and welded to the exhaust. The downpipe is made to last for a very long time, and the flex pipes are relatively sacrificial, with the remaining exhaust bits somewhere in between , longevity wise. The flexpipe is made to be a bolt on bit, and once you remove the original one ,and use long lasting nuts and bolts, future replacements are much easier. IMHO, always replace flex pipe with the correct bolt in part, which does not involve welding the extremely expensive downpipe, nor altering the remaining exhaust configuraation. Regards, Tom S.
