Removed the SID and ACC by first prying them loose with a dash trim tool (Pro-Fit, available from Crutchfield). Then grabbed the cage and wiggled it back and forth until the left (steering wheel) side of the cage popped loose. Couldn't "wiggle out" the right side so I partially removed the front of the dashboard (4 or 5 torx screws accessible via the openings left when the SID and ACC were removed). Pulled the right side of the dashboard front out, far enough to remove the cup holder (two torx screws). With the cup holder out, I could access where the right side of the cage interlocked with the dashboard face. With a couple of fingers I could pull the dashboard face material to the side enough to disengage with the cage. Then the cage just slid out, no problem, done.
The dashboard face material is a somewhat rubbery plastic (mine has the faux aluminum trim look to it). It bends and stretches easily without cracking or snapping. I was afraid I would break it when I pulled the right side out but no problem there.
On looking at the radio in the cage, I figured out why it was stuck in there so tight. There are two clips on each side (4 total) that the DIN tool pushes inward when you insert the DIN tool. On one of those clips, the point of the DIN tool found its way onto the wrong side of the clip (i.e. between the clip and the radio body). Thus the DIN tool actually pushed the clip OUTWARD, and further wedged the radio into the cage. So the radio was never going to come out of the cage like that.
Thanks to everyone who responded to my earlier question on this. Glad to have a royal PITA behind me.
