E-brake/rolling in gear...

Today my parking brake, emergency brake, whatever you call it, crapped out. I pulled on the handle and it flew to the top (almost broke the plastic console) and the wires underneath are loose.
I just had the cables replaced two winters ago, so I'm assuming it has something to do with the coupling that connects the single wire from the handle to the two cables going to each rear wheel. When looking from the top, I can see the wire going from the handle into the rubber grommet and it looks fine.
Looks like I have to take the center muffler and heat shield out to get to the coupling! Awful lot of work to just reconnect it.
Anyone experience this before? Do you think the couple rusted and broke? Or have the cables just disconnected?
Also, when I parked the front wheels on a steep incline so I could crawl under the void, (before I went under luckily!) I noticed the car slowly rolling backwards while in reverse and/or 1st gear. What's up with that? Bad compression in the cylinders?
Thanks,
Alex
