Sludged engines + damage

The thread about the 1999 got me wondering what the general consensus on the board is re dealing with a partially sludged engine... how much damage does the sludge buildup typically do to these engines aside from the obvious oil pressure issue?
EG: If you had an engine with significant sludge buildup, and you catch it before failure, clean the pan etc, are you necessarily looking at a complete engine overhaul to prevent engine failure down the road?
This board is a bit of an exclusive club, knowledge-wise... I suspect the majority of 9-5 owners have no clue re the issues + how to prevent them and I bet a lot of the cars are sludging. Makes buying a used 1999-2003 Saab a bit of a crapshoot! no?
