Turbo, Mass Airflow Sensor and Catylitic Converter

Hello Saab People!
My 01 9-5 had lost power and was blowing white smoke with a sulfuric smell, more so when accelerating. It also makes a whirring sound that increases as RPMs go up and from everything I have read, this is the GT 17 turbo about to give out.
A little random history:
The check engine light had been on and the SAAB shop said it was from Champion plugs. NGKs plugs were installed and the light still came on.
A couple months later, there was blue smoke at startup, then a sudden power decrease, whirring noise and white sulfur smoke. I changed the pvc tubes that had given out, no changes.
I installed a used mass airflow sensor (white smoke came out of the tube when I changed it) and the car ran normal, the check engine light went out, but there is still the white smoke with the sulfer smell and the whirring noise.
Does a bad mass airflow sensor cause the turbo to wear out? Does this all sound like a bad turbo? Why would there be such a power increase with the changing of the mass airflow sensor if the turbo was bad? Does any of this have anything to do with the catalytic converter?
Any input is much appreciated.!
