Unfortunately, if a broken timing belt is the cause, you are in for a lot more than just a new belt. The V6 is an "interference" engine (as is the 4-cylinder), meaning that the valves can contact the pistons and get bent or broken if the timing belt breaks. It is a common method of building engines, particularly 4 valve per cylinder engines.
What this means is replacement of the cylinder heads is all but required. I do not know if anyone rebuilds these heads. Last I heard, they are not rebuildable, or parts necessary to a rebuild are not available.
Any 900, 9000 or 9-5 with the V-6 and an uncertain service history should have their timing belts, tensioner, pulleys and water pump changed immediately upon purchase to avoid any potential issues. Last year, I bought a 2002 Arc, and had the TB and water pump replaced first thing. I was very nervous driving the car just the 45 or so miles from the dealer to my house to my specialist shop. And that car had only 84k on it!
If the maintenance is kept after, these engines are one of the best that Saab has engineered. But neglect them, and it'll be expensive...
My sympathies to you...
