Failed turbo? How much oil is too much?

My wife was out in our '01 last night - I got the call: "The car is running rough, and blowing lots of smoke, I parked it." We CAA'd it home - my initial diagnosis - bad turbo ('01 LPT 195k km). Today it isn't running rough but it IS making a huge smoke screen when revved - doesn't smell too oily though.
I opened up both ends of the turbo - I can just feel some play in the shaft when I wiggle it, and it turns smoothly. I took off the bottom end of the intercooler output hose - and did NOT get about two tablespoons of nice fresh oil in my face (it fell on the cardboard instead... I was ready).
So how much oil is 'too much' for that pipe? If it looked like that oil had taken a long time to collect I wouldn't be worried - but it is nice clean oil which means it all collected there recently I think.
Opinions please!
