Emotion versus logic......or...... Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: which car to sell? Saabnet classifieds?, Rob ![]() |
EMOTION: I would keep the Saab hands-down. I don't think that there is any comparison.
LOGIC: The Mazda wins on the basis of logic for two reasons. 1) mileage is much lower and therefore expected maintenance should be a lot less. 2) the 2009 Consumer Reports survey shows quite a difference in maintenance issues. The Mazda is solidly above average to way above average in every category except brakes (way below average). The Saab covers the full range from way below average to way above average (7 categories were below to way below average, 5 categories were average, and 5 categories were above to way above average.
Unfortunately, Consumers Report does not delineate a category further; so it's impossible to know whether a category is way below average because of a minor nuisance issue or a failure that's leaving people stranded.
I had a 2000 9-5 Aero which I bought new and put 280K miles on through Aug. 2007 when I replaced it with a new 2007 9-5. During my 8 years of ownership I did not have a single instance of extraordinary maintenance. I do virtually all of the maintenance myself; this did take the bite out of some of the maintenance required.
