In theory, the rotors should last significantly longer than the brake pads. Back in the day, the brake pads would wear down, instead of them wearing down the rotor. That said, the brake pads *would* etch some grooves into the rotor anyway, and to ensure best stopping power when installing new brakes, you'd get the rotors turned just to smooth it out. No big deal.
Nowadays, there are many "lifetime guarantee" brake pads out there, and they will dig into your rotor and eat it up, basically switching the roles of the parts. Stuff like this can really shorten the lifespan of rotors.
Still, unless you have real problems with your brakes, you should be able to turn the rotors AT LEAST once, more if
-you have quality brakes
-you are nice to your brakes
-and/or have a shop that knows how to use a lathe correctly (I have had Pep Boys screw up my rotor before).

You shouldn't EVER need new rotors *before* you need new pads. If you do, it's probably because the rotors got warped - not because they were worn down.

But hey, maybe there's a sale on brake rotors, and maybe your mechanic charges a lot for labor - so sure, go ahead and replace your rotors. but my mechanic charges me $10/rotor to turn 'em; eeuro costs $70/rotor for new AEM parts. I'm convinced that turning the rotors is both safe and economical. If you have the cash, go ahead and get new rotors every time. but I hate to see people spend a thousand dollars on a brake job that should cost maybe $200.
