There is a large body of discussion over the past few years which tends to lean heavily towards using synthetic. The car needs around 5-10K miles of break in with fossil before switching to synthetic. Thereafter, oil changes can be lenghtened from every 3K to 10K miles. The cost is therefore pretty much a wash. The benefit of syn is better protection at startup, less carbon buildup in the engine, and better buffering of oxidants.
The top three oils, listed in order of preference, are Royal Purple (avail from oiltown.com by the case), Amsoil, and Mobil 1. There is a large body of testing data for Royal Purple, thanks to Robert Davis, which supports the 10K oil change intervals. The RP also has detergents which keep the engine clean.
The flip side of the argument, supported by Consumer's Report, is that 3K oil changes with a quality oil such as Castrol GTX shows little or no wear in an engine after 100K+ miles. There are a lot of Saabers, including me, that have over 200K miles on their engines with Castrol GTX. So there is some practical backing for this position.
I switched to Royal Purple in my '95CSE due to the wealth of solid info on the benefits, and the cost equality with less frequent oil changes. One major item that I would like to protect is the turbo bearing.
A newer car should get along fine with 10W30. If you are living in a really cold climate, consider 0 or 5W30. If in a warm area and doing a lot of highway driving, 10W40. Also buy a good filter, AC Delco's Duragard Gold? has been highly recommended, as has the Mobil 1 filter.
Happy Saabing!
