Or maybe the cable attachment to the gear shift in the console.
D-I-Y replacement of the switch is easy but it is anexpensive part. Luckily there is a quick and cheap work around, involving using a paper clip as an electrical jumper, to prove/disprove the problem cause before you spend $250+ for a new switch assembly. Search here for posts regarding thsi problem.
A used switch from a wrecked car may be the cheapest option - if the problem is the switch.
